So I'm not trying to brag here but rather to show my true amazement at Ian's reading abilities. He's been reading books for months now. Mostly books we have read together so he's familiar with them, technically reading is memorized words. You can tell he is really reading because he will self-correct himself at times, go back and reread, and if you watch his eyes he is always looking at the words carefully as he reads them. He has an amazing ability to memorize things (letters, numbers, planets, dinosaur names, dialogues from movies and TV show, etc.) He is constantly asking "what spells it" as he points to everything with a word on it. You tell him once and he never forgets it. He has often looked at the computer monitor or something on TV and pointed out words he sees, usually embedded in text where it takes me a few minutes to figure out where he is seeing the word.
Anyhow, I came across some old files from when I taught 1st grade and administered the beginning of the 1st grade reading assessment and sight word list. We were watching Sesame Street and eating cereal at the time and I just sat down and talked to him as I would a student. I had the timer hidden so he wouldn't get distracted and said I had a story for him to read. He did his usual curious overall glance at the page, looked at the t.v. finished his bite of cereal and started reading. My 3 year old read 22 words in a minute, and 68 sight words. Basically he is above grade level for an incoming 1st grader. I almost got tears in my eyes I was so proud of him. And it's not like we've ever pressured him into reading. He just loves words.
